Locks 34 and 35 are a modern upgrade to the famous “Flight of Five” lock system originally built to carry the Erie Canal over the steep Niagara Escarpment at Lockport, NY. When New York State supplanted the old Erie Canal with the larger Barge Canal in 1918, one side of the Flight was replaced with the pair of mechanized locks seen here on the right. On the left, the other side of the original Flight remained, its gates removed, to function as a spillway.
