Dear Mr. Conole:
The Chaplains on duty here take pleasure in informing you that your
daughter has arrived at this Training Center. Since her arrival we have
talked with her about the many opportunities that will be given her to carry
on her religious duties and practices as she did at home. In addition to this
the Chaplains will always be available for a personal interview with her at any
time she desires.
While your daughter is here she will be given extensive training which will
prepare her mentally, morally and physically for those duties and adjustments
necessary in Navy life. The Navy has assigned to this Training Center officers
and chief petty officers who, because of their wide experiences and qualities of
leadership, are most competent to train her. The Chaplains also will play an
important part by offering a series of talks and discussions which will help to
prepare her morally and spiritually for her life in the Naval Service.
Now the your daughter is in the Navy she will be facing many new and chal –
lenging experiences. There will be times when she will be depressed and home-
sick. To help her through these difficult moments we suggest that your letters
be filled with news of yourselves and her family and friends. Snapshots of school
chums and interesting newspaper clippings of activities at home will be of inesti-
mable value. We recommend that you refrain from mentioning home problems and
difficulties unless your daughter can help in their solution. Otherwise, to bring
such matters to her attention needlessly, will upset her and cause her undue anx-
iety.
This letter does not require an answer. However, should you care to write us
concerning your daughter, we would be most happy to hear from you.
With every best wish and blessing, I remain
Sincerely yours,
Fa Vincent Mahoney
Chaplain – U.S. Navy
