Alicia Nestle (b. 1974) was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to Rochester in 1999 at the age of 25. Nestle grew up in a blended Latino family; her father was from Puerto Rico and her mother was from Nicaragua. Though her parents were not able to attend college, Nestle graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in 1997 and later earned a Master’s degree at Nazareth College. She began working at Nazareth College as the Assistant Director in New Media Marketing and Communications in 2009.

In this interview, Nestle highlights the cultural differences–including those pertaining to gender roles–that exist between her Hispanic family and her husband’s Caucasian family. She discusses her parents’ education and employment histories and comments on the generation gap between her parents and grandparents.  Nestle also describes her own educational experiences and touches on the role of religion in her family.
