Amalia Gillig was born in 1988 on an American military base in Spain to an Argentine mother and American father. Her mother immigrated to the United States with her family sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

In this interview, Amalia Gillig discusses her upbringing, some of the traditions her mother raised her with, and her relationship with identity as someone who is both Latino and white. She explains how she plans to teach her son Spanish, her connections to Argentina, and her pride in being half Argentine. She also discusses moving to the Washington, DC, area when she was younger, the diversity and connectivity of the Latino community, and immigration policy.
