Letter, Kate Gleason to James Gleason
A letter from Kate Gleason to her brother, James Gleason. Kate describes a Euchre prize she is sending Jim and tells him about the “Booth fiasco.” Kate shares her thoughts on a Rochester street car drivers’ strike, discusses a social visit and a debt, and asks Jim about the classes he plans to take at Cornell.

William Gleason,
Manufacturer of Machinists Tools,
Office, Brown’s Race,
Rochester, N.Y., April 4th. 1889
Dear Jim,-
You will receive by this mail one of my valuable Euchre
prizes; it is a little bisque baby shoe that has been here in the
office for some time but I have come to the conclusion that it is not
“swell” enough to hold a place in our magnificent offices so I am send-
ing it to you to decorate your rooms. In it you will find some bon-
boniere candy for Gerturde’s box and wrapped around it is this morn-
ing’s Democrat giving a full account of Booth’s fiasco last night.
Nobody here takes any stock in the paralysis theory, they put it
down to “plain drunk.” I’m sorry for Blood’s disappointment and
hope he got his money back.
The street car drivers are out on a strike
and it’s fine weather for it,-mud 3” thick. The probabilities are
that the drivers will be beat for the company has been preparing for
a strike all winter and have been able to hire all the men they
want from the New York City street car strikers who were beaten and
thrown out of a job last year.
We had a fine spread at Murphy’s Tues-
day night, -would’nt mind another invitation there to tea.
Walter Barron has been in to see me, wanted to know whether

Crane had gone yet, -took him five minutes to get out the name, he
was trying so hard to appear indifferent and pretend he had forgot-
ten it. But it was too thin, I could have seen through it even with-
out my spectacles.
I’m going to charge you with the $8 you are to col-
lect from Blood, that makes $33 so far this term.
Let me know whether
you will be allowed to take the machine designing or not. And if
you can’t what you will take in its place. I would advise you to
ask Prof. Smith’s advice for the good it will do you and then you
might ask Prof. Thurston’s for the good it will do him.
Lovingly,
Kate.
