Letter, Kate Gleason to James Gleason
A letter from Kate Gleason to her brother, James Gleason. Kate reports news of their friend, Emma Michel, in Detroit. She tells Jim about their neighbor, Mr. Irwin, selling his share of his company and leaving town, and of their brother Andrew’s work in the family’s tool shop.

Dear Jim,-
Enclosed please find N.Y. dft. for $50. I have figured
that this ought to last you until the 1st. of Feb. with what you
took with you. That is in case you don’t have to pay for shop work
again; if you have to pay for that this term, you’ll probably run
short about the 25th.
I’ve heard from Emma and she is prospering, -her
number is 146 not 162 as I wrote you Sunday. She made an “impress-
ion” on the train who brought her a lunch of cold turkey fruit &c.
on a silver plated salver a la Barnes of New York. She was very
much impressed with him indeed but I have not heard that things will
be likly to result as seriously as between Barnes and Enid. She
has taken first prize at a Euchre party and beside the glory it is a
very valuable prize. And at a dancing party she had enough partners
and to spare. She writes me that she can’t stay there long, -her
clothes won’t do and she has sent on orders to her dress-maker here
to make up her wedding dress (the one Mrs. Michel gave her Christmas)
And to make it decolleté, the decolletér the better
Mr. Irwin has sold
out his file-factory stock so that he will no longer be coming in
here to brighten my weary hours of toil. He sold it to a man
named Williams for $8,600 worth of Roch. Plow Co. stock and a farm

or rather vineyard near Canandaigua. Hav’nt seen Williams yet but
no matter if he is nice, it will be a long time before we will find
as pleasant a neighbor as Mr. Irwin again. Father almost wept
tears when he came in last night to show us the gilt-edged certifi-
cates for which he had traded his half of the file factory.
Andrew finished up six worms yesterday, a job that heretofore has
been intrusted to no one but Doyle. But Doyle was busy so Father
showed Andrew how to do one and then he finished up the other five
all alone by himself and they are a credit to the establishment.
Very lovingly,
Kate.
