Letter, James Gleason to Kate Gleason
A letter to Kate Gleason from her brother, James Gleason. Jim reports to Kate that the Cornell crew team wants a donation that he cannot pay and proclaims that the boarding house has “ruined” him. He apologizes about asking for money and assures her that he has not thrown money around “loose,” but that his boarding house and the Delta Upsilon fraternity dues have been major expenses.

Dear Kate,-
I read with great
pleasure of your return to
Rochester. My reasons for this
joy are due partly to the money
business. You were always an
admirer of Cornell oarsmen. This
year we are to send out two
crews. They want five dollars
from me and I cant pay: hence,
I wont. Broughton’s boarding
house has ruined us. Two of
the boys Breckenridge and
Shepard cant come back next
year on account of their
expenses this year. Well if
you take into account the clothes
of last year, that I didnt get

this year, I wont run very far
over my allowance when you
send $35. which is the least
that I can straighten out with.
I am sorry my expenses were so
high this year, but I know I
havent thrown money around
loose. The whole trouble is
with the boarding house and
being a member of a bloody
chapter.
Yours
Jim.
P.S. I will get home next
Tuesday night.
