Letter, James Gleason to Andrew Gleason
A letter from James Gleason to his brother, Andrew Gleason. Jim tells Andrew about injuring his ankle during a wrestling match and counsels Andrew on the pros and cons of having a bicycle in Ithaca. He advises that Andrew save his money and notes that he will begin preparing for college soon. He mentions that all the laundry he sent home last time did not make it back to him. He tells Andrew that he will have “48 things to do” in Ithaca with the $48 he has.

Dear Andrew;
Yours of Feb 28
received. I am laid up for today
with a strained ankle, a consequence
of wrestling with a fellow who
weighs 10lbs heavier than I do. The
match took place in the gymnasium
and among the distinguished
spectators were Pres. Adams and
Dr Fuertes. I won the first
two falls, and lost the third fall
when I hurt my ankle. This
thows me out of the race for
tomorrow night, But there are
three two D.U. entered so perhaps one
will win.
About that bicycle you wanted

my views. I should say that you
will have to decide for yourself
whether you want one bad enough
to invest. As Kate says you
would not have much use for
one here, although a very few of
the students have wheels which
they ride for a on a few miles of
poor country road. I will not
have time to ride the wheel as
the shop will take all my time,
and then you must invest your
hard earned cash on yourself.
Why not save the money for
your shell. It will not be
long now before you will be
able to do something in the
athletic line. When I get

home in June, you will begin
to prepare for College I understand.
I sent the satchel home the
other day. Tell Mother that she
didnt return all the laundry
last time.
You say that you have $48, of your
own. What a bloated bond
holder, If you were here you
would have 48 different things
to do with it.
Yours
Jim.
