Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene Conole to her parents. Irene wonders when Jo Alberts is getting married and hopes to send her a gift. She has had her alarm clock fixed and is happy to be switching from grey to blue uniforms. She says she knows a man named Ian Lynn who appeared on Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour. He comes into the Enlisted Men’s Club where she works and they dance together. Often he is the last to leave and she has to kick him out.

Dear Mom & Dad,
Received both of your letters.
I was wondering when Jo Alberts
was going to get married. I hung around
with her for three years when I worked
at Bausch & Lomb. I believe she is a
couple of years older than me. I
might possibly send her a card but I
don’t like to unless I send her a little
something. Tomorrow is payday so
I’ll see how I stand.
I worked last night and got
$1.80 in tips which was good for the
place was practically dead. With the
money I make there I’m going to use
it on Xmas gifts. Four dollars plus
tips come in mighty handy.
I had my alarm clock fixed again.
The other guy hardly fixed it before. He
was a civilian from Norfolk Va. They
got rid of him for there were too many
complaints on his work. Now we have

a sailor doing the repair work. So I hope
he fixes my clock okay. If not, he sure
is going to receive a nice complaint.
We went into blues today. Am I
glad for I dislike the grey uniforms. The
weather around here has been quite
cool.
Yes I know Ian Lynn. He was on
Ted Macks before and won twice but
someone beat him on the last try.
They had a write-up in our paper about
him and it seems that Ted Mack has
been after Lynn to return to his program
again. We call Lynn “Fuzzy” and he is
a nice kid. We always jitterbug together
and sometimes he tap dances while
he jitterbugs. In fact I yell at him every
day at 5:45pm. We have dungaree beer
at the club from 4:30pm to 5:45pm. All
the fellows come up after work in
their dungarees, which is the only time
they can wear dungarees up here, and
have a few beers. The boys are worse
than women for instead of drinking
their beer they sit around and gab. They

have to be out of here by 5:45pm so that’s
my job to see that they are. Fuzzy is
usually the last one to leave.
I forgot to send Rose Giralies a
birthday card. Oh well, she didn’t send
me one either.
I hope Theresa makes out on her
transportation to Brockport.
As for the number following my
name, I don’t know if it’s a must
or not. I forgot about it on your
letter.
Glad to hear Dad is going to stick
it out to July at Delco.
It seems Mike has a slight Irish
temper.
Well I guess I’ll close now and
write Aunt Anna. Give James my
love. Bye for now.
Love and Kisses
Irene
