Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene Conole to her parents. Irene writes from the hospital as she continues to recover from her broken jaw. She tells her parents to cancel her life insurance policy for she has $10,000 of Navy life insurance that will carry over into civilian life when she leaves the Navy. Irene discusses her recreational activities and tells her parents how she impressed the men she played shuffleboard with. She reports that she will have new X-rays taken of her jaw and will have the wires removed next week. She asks her mother to send the sizes of everyone in the family.

Dear Mom & Dad,
Here is a letter I received today
from a Mr. Maris. He took Mr. Parmalee’s
place while he was on jury. I thought
this letter was nice especially the last
sentence.
Before I forget I was talking to some
of the fellows that work in the Ad Bldg
where everyone’s record, pay etc offices
are. We got talking about insurance and
they say it is foolish for me to keep
up the insurance I have at home for
I can carry the $10,000 policy over in
civilian life. So will you cancel mine
and see if I can get some money back?
The fellows seem to think I can get some
money back. Next week I’m sending
you a money order.
As for my formals you can do
what you like with them for I never
cared too much for them. They’re strictly
made for weddings, not formals or
banquets. I think Theresa has my
hoop. I remember her borrowing it and
she she was going to sew it in the
middle to make it shorter. If she
doesn’t have it, I think someone in
the family has it.
I received a letter from Mamie
and I don’t know what I am going to
[page 2]
2. write her at all.
It won’t be any disappointment if
I don’t receive any packages. As for the
sunshine club, I may receive something,
for they all always send flowers etc,
to people who are sick or got married.
As for the funny books you can send
the ones that the boys buy except the
silly ones. I don’t care too much for
them.
I’m glad that the piano is going to the
YMCA for they will enjoy it.
How was the bowling banquet?
Boy the weather here is hot! It’s a
good thing the wind blows and it’s
nice and cool coming in off of the
lake.
From Aunt Anna’s letter, I took it
that she was going to be up there for
that one day, Saturday. She was going
to buy a coat and a couple of dresses.
She had a ride up with a couple of women.
This afternoon two of the fellows on
the MAA force are taking me to see a
baseball game. I was up to the club
last night and played shuffleboard all
the time I was there. I beat the pants
off the two fellows and some of the
[page 3]
3. fellows were remarking how good a
shuffleboard player I was and that
they haven’t seen any girl that was any –
where’s near as good as I am. It’s the
Irish in me. Listen to the bull, will you?
Tomorrow night I am going to the
dance at the Drill Hall. There is a
charity carnavil here tomorrow and
Saturday. We’re having Tommy Dorsey’s
band and that place is going to be packed.
Dr. Suitor came back and he is going
to have X rays taken of my jaw. He says
that if my jaws heal like ordinary people,
I’ll probably have the wires removed
Monday.
Will you send the sizes of everyone
in the family including Aunt Anna? I
want tho whole works for further
information.
I think this is all for now. Save
the letter from Mr. Maris for me. You
can put it with the other letters I’m saving. Bye for now
Love and Kisses
Irene
P.S. Don’t forget about the insurance.
Give James my love.
