Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene to her parents sharing her plans to go to Baltimore with some other WAVES on an upcoming “liberty” day, or day off. Irene reports that she has finally received her uniform shoes. She hopes that she will be assigned to a job as a storekeeper when she finishes basic training.

Nov. 1, 1952
Dear Mom and Dad,
I received the package and all the girls
in my cubicle had a party. There was everything
I like.
I received a letter from Sheilah and it
seems that they are not going to Arizona after
all. Her husband came back and they have
bought a home in Greece.
You can cash this check for me and
that is a note I got with it. I didn’t cash it
here for I’d have to go way over on Main side
to go to the bank and I couldn’t see it.
I got a letter from Theresa Giralies and
I haven’t even written to the Giralies’s yet. I also
got one from Mary Lee and Jay Foley in New York.
I’m so tired for I did all my washing to
get ready to go on liberty tomorrow. I didn’t go
today for one of the girls got some demerits
and she had to work them off today. She got them
for she didn’t make her bed last Saturday for
her family came up and one of the girls
said she would make her bed but didn’t. So three
of us girls decided to wait and go on liberty
with her tomorrow for otherwise she wouldn’t
go alone. We are going to the 450 in Baltimore
[page 2]
to see what it’s like. At least there won’t be
so many Waves and sailors in Baltimore on a
Sunday.
I finally got my G.I shoes four days ago
and boy are they comfortable. When I get home I’m
going to Mc Curdys and buy the American Girl
standard Wave shoe. They are much neater looking.
I’ve been doing good on my classes but
the test we had yesterday was a little toughl tougher.
All the things we’ve got to learn. I don’t know if
I’ll be able to remember it all when I leave here.
I’m going to be stationed in San Diego Calif
or Washington D.C. I have to wait and see until
my orders come through. My interviewer was
a man and he was born in Rochester N.Y.
I’ll either be Personnelman or Storekeeper. I
don’t know if I told you this before or not
I hope I get storekeeper but I am going to be on
the job training which I wanted.
Thursday we go on service week which is
all cleaning details and working in the galley.
Our Co. Commander says it either makes us
or breaks us.
Well I’ll be signing off for now for I have
to get the girls together and March them to chow.
Love and Kisses
Irene
