Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene Conole to her parents. Irene writes that the Vice-President of the Board of Governors of the Enlisted Men’s Club is taking her out for a steak dinner because she has gotten her jaw wires removed. She reports that Theresa is going to Brockport for school and that Mary Leathem might quit her job at the Rochester Telephone Co. due to nerves. Irene tells her parents she is taking a long leave to come home in June and will bring her friend Janet with her. She writes that her friend Eric is out of the hospital but he does not know what is wrong with him. Irene tells her parents that sailors brought a bird into the Enlisted Men’s Club and tried to get it drunk. She has advanced in rank and plans to buy her new stripes with her next paycheck.

“Thursday”
Dear Mother and Dad,
Boy is it cold today! It’s the
wind really. It started blowing last night.
I washed my hair today and I bet I have
to sit under the dryer in order for it to
dry before 6:00 pm. I have a big date tonight.
The Vice-President of the Board of Governors
of the E club is taking me out and buying
me a steak dinner. He was razzing one
day when I had my jaws wired and
asked me if I wouldn’t like a steak
dinner. So I told him yes when I had the
wires removed. He is a very nice fellow.
Last night UR – 1 squadron had
their party at the E Club and it was
more of a brawl than a party. It’s a
good thing they had four Shore Patrol
fellows there. After we got them out at
midnight you should have seen the mess
they left. I pity the clean up party.
Received a letter from Aunt
Anna and Mary Leathem. Aunt Anna
also told me of Theresa going to Brockport.
It’s a shame she couldn’t study to be a
nurse like she wanted to. I hear she also
[page 2]
2. has to go back and forth to school.
Mary Leathem might quit the Telephone
Co. She was advised to do so by her doctor
for the work and the people are making
her a nervous wreck.
Mrs. Stowell wrote me and told me
about her garden. She said that after
school is out in June, Rosie Taibi is
leaving California to stay with her father
who is in Pa. I didn’t know that Mr.
Taibi was living in Pennsylvania.
Oh Mary Leathem and her husband
bought a new car. It’s a 53 Hudson black
bottom and cream top plus it’s hydromatic.
I am taking an eleven or twelve days
leave in June. I’m bringing Janet with
me too. So I’ll be able to see Theresa
graduate. Ask her if Janet and I have
to have invitations. Will probably be home
the 19th or the morning of the 20th. Have to
work out transportation by car. My boss
might be going home to Buffalo, he says,
so he’ll take us.
On your letters to me you can
write SN instead of SA now. I get rated
June 1st instead of the 8th. After pay day
I’m buying my new stripes.
Received a letter from Eric. He’s
out of the hospital now but the doctors
3. couldn’t find anything wrong with
him. They said it was probably his nerves
so they made him stay there for a rest
and kept him on a diet. He isn’t allowed
to drink or snack now and practically all
he can have to eat is minced meat and
steamed fish. He’s not to happy about the
diet.
While I’m writing this letter there’s
a darn fly bothering me. If I ever catch
it I’ll make mince meat out of him.
Last night about 6:00pm the fellows
that work in the bar at the club brought
in a baby bird. It look something like
a sparrow but it had larger wings with
black and white feathers. We couldn’t
find out what kind of a bird it was.
The fellows took some bread and soaked
it in some beer. They wanted to get the
bird loaded. What a bunch of characters.
Everytime we put the bird outside it
would hop back in. So finally we put
it on the top of the jukebox. What a bird.
Everytime the record would stop playing
he would squawk but when there was
music he would close his eyes and never
make a sound.
Mr. Parmalee in Buffalo wrote me
again. Mr. Moris is taking his place
on the Armed Forces Committee for he has
been promoted. Mr. Parmalee has done such
[page 4]
a good job that he has been put in charge
of the Armed Forces Committee in the Western
Div. He wrote me about visiting his
daughter who is in college. He is a
wonderful person.
Guess I’ll close for now and
answer Henry’s letter. Give James my
love. Bye for now.
Love and Kisses
Irene
