Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene Conole to her parents. Irene notes that her friends from Rochester will be visiting in a week and that her Aunt Anna plans to visit her in August. Her friend Eric, who lives in England, is sick with ulcerative colitis. Irene writes that someone broke her alarm clock and that she received a nice compliment from a man at work.

Dear Mom and Dad,
That was a nice picture of the
Savarys and I posted it on the bulletin
board for they are having a Red Cross
drive here.
I received a letter from Aunt Anna
today and she said that she is getting
her vacation in August and that she
would like to spend a week of it down
here with me. So I am going to check on
the hotel outside the gate for rates but
I just remembered that there is a place
here called BOQ and it costs $3.44 a day
and it gives service just like in a
hotel. I don’t know about food but she
can eat outside the gate for there are a couple
of places that serve good food. She would
have to pay for it if she stayed in a hotel
too.
I received a letter from Rosie and she
and her girlfriends are coming down
next Saturday. I told her that she can’t stay
in our barracks for we are crowded but
she can stay at BOQ. I don’t know if she’d
like the idea of paying $3.44 but that’s the

2. way it is.
I wrote Mrs. Stowell again and also
sent her a picture.
Eric wrote again, the English fellow,
and he has ulcerative celetis. A Wave
Hospital Corpsman told me that she
thinks that he has infected ulcers.
I received a call from the dispensary
today and was told to report tomorrow
morning for a booster shot. I don’t
know whether it’s a joke or not for a
fellow was kidding me last night
about having shots for he works at
the dispensary. The fellow that called
claims that the whole base is going to
be inoculated. So I’ll see. We are
suppose to have booster shots once a
year but I’ve only been in the Navy
for six months.
I don’t have a cold now but I still
have a slight cough. My sinus is
draining thou. Today it is raining
but yesterday we didn’t have to wear
a coat.
Boy did the fellows celebrate St.
Patrick’s yesterday! I joined them in
singing Irish songs.
I think I’ll bring my coat home for
storage.
I think it’s a good idea about having

nice.
It was the Lawrence photographers
that took my picture and also the boys.
I like their work.
One of the girls knocked my alarm clock
off the locker and broke the alarm. It
won’t go off now so I use Janet’s. After Before
she leaves for work she sets it for me.
I am also going to take the clock and my
dinner ring down to Navy Exchange and
have the clock fixed and the ring thicken.
The ring is getting so thin that it’s liable
to snap.
Two nights ago a fellow, who I have seen
at the club but never spoke to, came up to
me and told me that he was married
once and from watching me and listening
to me talk to other fellows has restored
his faith in women. I thought it was
a nice compliment. He is in his thirties
and we had a nice conversation.
Well I guess this is all for now so
will close for now.
Love and Kisses
Irene
P.S. I’m glad you and James like my picture.
