Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene to her parents about her finances. Irene asks her parents to check her drawers at home for wage slips from her former job at the Telephone Company and reports that she is going to get her wage slip from the Navy to bring home soon. She has to wait until payday to buy a gift for someone named Eric. Irene talks about a friend at home who has been bitten by a dog and shares that a man named Jay has asked for her phone number. She fills her parents in on her friend Coleen and notes that the base on which she is stationed was mentioned in a Walter Winchell radio broadcast.

Dear Mom & Dad,
I don’t have a slip of my wages I made
at the Tele Co. In fact I don’t remember
receiving any. I haven’t gotten anything
from the Co. since I’ve been here but I
do remember getting something when I was
in boot camp. If so, I brought it home
when I was on leave and it’s probably
upstairs in my drawer.
Friday I’m going to the Ad Bldg for
my slip on the wages I made so far in
the Navy. I’ll bring it home if I get the
weekend of Feb 7th off. If I am coming home I
will call you first to let you know. I want
to bring some dry cleaning fluid and 101
back with me.
Sorry to hear about Mrs. Stowell’s
husband. Did she mention receiving
a letter from me?
Why don’t they give Betty a lock jaw
shot anyway. Usually that’s the first
thing a doctor gives when a person is bitten
by a dog. I know of a black dog that
belongs to someone that lives around the
corner of Glendale and Fulton.

2. I didn’t send Eric a gift but Monday
when I get paid I’ll buy him something
at the Navy Exchange. I wrote him and
he says he is going to a specialist to see
what is wrong with him for he’s tired
of being ill.
I don’t know if I told you this before
but Jay, the fellow in New York, wrote me
and wanted to know if there is a phone
that he could call me on for he’d rather
call than write. So I sent him the number
of the pay station in the lounge. It’ll
seem like old times.
We’ve been having rain for the last
couple of days. You should see the fog that they
have down here!
Coleen has moved from Second St
to Central Park. It sounded like she has
a big beautiful apartment. She’s wondering
when the baby is going to get her teeth.
Here is something. Maybe you heard it.
Walter Winchell said on his broadcast one
night that if you have any boys in Korea,
to write them and if you have any boys
in Patuxent River, to pray for them.
How about that?
Well will close for now and see if
that slip is in my drawer. It seems to me
that they never gave us our slip to the end
of January. I could call them when I get
home. Bye for now.
Love and Kisses
Irene
