Letter, Irene Conole to her parents
A letter from Irene Conole to her parents. Irene says that the E Club has decided to have a dance every Saturday and she will have to work during them. She reports receiving another letter from Aunt Anna and that one of the Waves went AWOL (absent without leave) and got a court martial for bad behavior. She had to scold two servicemen for carrying beer outside of the E Club while she was working and she is curious which Wave the Marines and sailors will pick to be “Miss Patuxent.”

Dear Mom & Dad,
Got back safely. I didn’t sleep
at all and I wasn’t even tired when
we got here. Arrived at 1:30am and
went to get something to eat.
I picked up the package Tuesday
and it arrived in good condition.
Saturday there is to be a dance
and they have decided on having a
dance every Saturday. I can still take
any weekend off but I like having
three days off during the week.
I received a letter from Aunt Anna
and now that she is settled she will
answer my letters right away, she says.
I like receiving letters from her.
Today, one of the girls told me
that she saw my picture in the photo
lab. It was the 8×10 one and colored.
She said it was terrific. Now I’m
anxious to see it.
There is a contest here between the
sailors and the Marines. They are going
to pick a Wave to be Miss Patuxent. We’re

all wondering who it’s going to be.
One of the girls went AWOL twice. She
received a Captain’s Mast and out of
that she got Summary Court Martial. Lieut.
Hughes called her parents and they are
coming in for the Summary. The girl
feels bad, finally, for she has disgraced
herself and disappointed her family. She
has been carrying on since she reported
aboard here.
Last night two guys went out of the
club with two pitchers of beer. I yelled at
them but they ignored me. So I went
out to get their license number and
the Master at Arms on the station was
driving by and saw me. They stopped
the fellows and brought them in. Both
were underage and work at the dispensary.
Instead of writing them up and hanging
them, they are barred from here. There
are still some who are trying to ruin it
for the rest of the fellows. I asked them
if they thought I was working here for
my health. Boy was I mad!
Well I guess this is all the news I
can think of for now.
Love and Kisses
Irene
