Dear Mrs Conole,
What a lovely
surprise I had when I got
home from the office yesterday
and found your gift awaiting
me. Thank you very much
indeed, it is very kind of you,
and I am very grateful. It
was quite unexpected.
Did you have a nice
Christmas and New Year? I do
hope so.
This year I have had the
most enjoyable time for quite
a number of years. Each day
I was out dining at
[page 2]
country inns or at parties.
The Tuesday before
Christmas we awoke to find
a few inches of snow on the
ground and during the day the
snow reached a depth of 14 inches.
I could see all my plans going
away because two wheels
aren’t very clever on snow
and ice, but luckily a quick
thaw set in on Thursday
afternoon and most of the
snow cleared away before
Saturday.
Snow looks very nice but
it makes a heck of a mess of
transport – here in England
at any rate.
This afternoon I was
watching on Television one
[page 3]
of your programmes that we
get each week – ‘The Burns &
Allen Show.’ It is a very good
show. I prefer it to another
one that came on a couple
of hours later ‘I Married Joan’
with Joan Davies. Do you
get them on your station?
It is most unusual
for me to be in the house
on an afternoon but I am
jut ridding myself of a
cold. I was going to a motor
cycle trial but it is very
cold with a strong Nor-Easter-
ly wind blowing.
I received a letter a
few days before Christmas
from Mr & Mrs Picone. I was

pleased to hear from them. I
must write now to them while
I am in, so I will close
wishing you ‘All the Best
for the New Year’, and thanks
again.
Yours sincerely,
Eric
