Dear Mrs Conole,
Thank you
for your letter.
I was very grieved to hear
of the death of Irene and I hope
that God gave you strength and
comfort in your days of sorrow.
Even though I had never met
Irene personally I knew her – through
her letters – almost as much as I
know my best and closest friends.
I always looked forward to receiving
her happy and carefree letters.
Yesterday I came out of hospital
and as soon as I can manage to
get into town I will try and
have some flowers mailed out

to you. and if this is possible
I should be very pleased if you
would put them on Irenes grave
for me.
A day or two before I received
your letter I got a letter from Sheilah
giving me the sad news. Even yet
I cannot fully credit such a
thing happening in my circle of
friends.
I can understand what a
great loss it will be to you
and I am very, very sorry.
Yours sincerely,
Eric Hodgkinson
