Dear Mrs Conole:
Sorry it has taken me so long to
answer your letter, but I received it only
today. We have been out on operations
this past month and just got back to
port. Was very happy to hear from you,
as I think of you ever so often. There has
been many thoughts concerning Irene’s family.
Again I say she was one girl that loved
life and was so happy all the time. I
know she will be missed by many.
I still have her picture that she gave me
and every time I look at it, something seems
to happen inside of me. Maybe some day
I will find out what it is.
Life here aboard ship is a lot different
than at Patuxent. Maybe the duty I had
there spoiled me. But I have learned a
lot of things aboard this ship that

I didn’t know before. I only hope that
some day we can do without all this
training for war and live a good peaceful
life.
I would be proud to have the record player
and records. She was always fond of new music
and could listen for hours at all new recordings.
I remember when she and I went to D.C.
together. We hunted all over for new records
and finally had to go out of town to get
them. The one “My Love, My Love” we
found after hunting for two days and she
played it over and over. She could sing it
about as good as anyone I know. The address
aboard ship here is the best place to send it.
Give my love to all and if ever you are
in need of a friend Don’t hesitate to write me.
May God bless you always
“Cal.”
