Letter, Andrew Gleason to James Gleason
A letter from Andrew Gleason to his brother, James Gleason. Andrew reports that he plans to retire from the family business in a year. He acknowledges that retirement would be a financial sacrifice, but he feels that it is necessary for his “peace of mind.” He predicts that his leaving will please Kate, credits Jim for the success of the business, and notes that he will be glad not to leave “under the strained relations” that Kate did.

Dear Jim-
Edith and I will remain
here till Saturday night
returning home sometime
Sunday. I want to talk
with you about plans I am con-
sidering and will look you
up Sunday evening.
I told Edith Wednesday noon
that I expected to retire from the
business within a year but
did not anticipate the possi-
bility of doing so within an
hour. I realize that it is

a very serious move but I do
not regret it as I value my
peace of mind more than any
pecuniary gain I would get
out of sticking along under
the circumstances.
Kate will get some satis-
faction out of it but she
will not be any the richer if
I can help it. I have
often said that you are en-
titled to much more than
one third of the business because
you have earned most of it
but with all due modesty I
claim to stand next. For the
same reason that you deserve
most of the credit I have felt

that it was up to me to accept
things just as they came but
lately the situation got to be
too much of a wear and tear
on my nerves.
I am thankful that
I am not leaving under the
strained relations that Kate
did and I will continue to have
the same interest in the
success of the business as
when I had an active part
in the management.
Yours
Andrew.
