Letter, Andrew Gleason to James Gleason
A letter from Andrew Gleason to his brother, James Gleason. Andrew shares news of Jim’s wife and son and updates Jim on business. He discusses prospective commissions, orders, and the status of the shop. Andrew writes that “Kate has left us strictly alone” and it is up to management to “sink or swim without her help.”

The Gleason Works Rochester, N. Y., Tues Apr 6 1915
Dear Jim
We have nothing but favorable news to
report so far so you ought to feel free to go as
far as you like. Miriam and Emmett
and Ed Frick was over to supper last evening
and we all made a pass at the new dances.
Miriam & Emmett were due to leave this eve
for a visit to the Schlicks in Washington but they
got a telegram yesterday stating that Emma
is sick and the trip was abandoned. Miriam
seemed under the weather last week but she is
apparently in the best of spirits now.
Kate spent two or three hours at the office
the day after you left, in a session with father
and between them they made up a letter to Mr Loving
which he signed. It was in reply to Mr Loving’s
last letter which you saw and was simply a
protest against the addition of worm gears to
our line. Mr Loving has since written in
reply to that stating that he had altogether a
different impression of the worm gear drive but
that his plan in regard to the consolidation might
not go through anyway as the General Motors people
did not seem disposed to buy.
Kate had a talk with Mr Chapin over the L. D. phone
about a week ago and he intimated that the
General Motors were using this stock deal as an
argument with Brown-Lipe-Chapin in order to
get favorable terms on their 1916 contract.
I had a talk over the phone Apr 1st with Mr
Warwick and he said that they have just se-
cured the General Motors 1916 contract. Inci-
dentally they have decided on spiral bevels and

in order to take care of the increase of business
in this line, Brown-L-C. has taken an option on
five more spiral Type Generators for delivery the
latter part of May. This makes 10 of these
which are still due them.
Both Kate and father talk as though they do not
expect Mr Loving to make good on his option and
she has had some further talk lately with
Ford and Enos of this city in regard to selling a
block of preferred stock. I of course have
made no comments or suggestions in regard
to the matter as nothing definite can be done
anyway.
We nearly broke the record for billing in March.
It was $84488.00 or less than $90 under the high
mark in 1910. Of course we may not have
so much to say about the billing this month
but I expect that we will equal the first four
months of last year any way.
We received NATS FIAT’S order a few days
ago for four spiral type generators. I suspect
that they intend to ship those to their works
in Turin Italy because they call for them
completely boxed and they seem familiar with
the requirements at Turin. We are
proceeding under the assumption that
everything is all right and regular. I
dont expect that there will be any
difficulty in satisfying Fenwick if it

turns out to be an order from their territory as
this seems to be the best way to handle it under
the circumstances whether we pay them a
commission later on or not.
With the General Motors all on spiral bevels
the only thing for Overland to do is swing into
line and that means a fat order from
New Process. There is not much doubt
of all the orders we want for the spiral Type
generators for six months ahead but we
will have to work harder for to move the stock
of the other generators on hand. Singer
gave up their option on all but two of the 3”
machines we were holding for them “for the
present”. The Boston Gear Wks ordered
a 3” a few days ago and we are now
following up two or three prospects on this sig.
Everything is working smoothly in the shop.
We have received some very good gear orders
and the prospects look good. I will
write to you again within a day or two.
Yours
Andrew
P.S. Kate has left us strictly alone so it
is up to to present management to sink or
swim without her help.

Pete Smith has just returned
from Dodge Bros Detroit and reports
that they are very much interested in
the spiral type. They say it is
strictly up to John Dodge however and
he is now on the way to San Francisco.
I suppose that he will stop at the
St Francis Hotel and it might be a
good place to dig him out then.
