Letter, A. Mahon to Kate Gleason
A letter to Kate Gleason from the treasurer of the Florence Cadet Corps, Archie Mahon. Mahon discusses James Gleason’s standing with the yacht club and the Florence Cadet Corps. He suggests that Jim ask for a furlough rather than pay daily fines for missing drills while he is away at college.

Dear Kate:-
Acting upon the suggestion
made in regard to the “Yacht
Club,” and having the financial
affairs of this “Corps” under my
especial supervision, I have
enclosed a statement of Jim’s
standing on my books, with
which I would beg to tender
a trifling suggestion, which
may make prove a benefit to
him financially, & which is viz:
The constitution of this “Corps”
as amended says, – “Any member
being absent from any regular
drill or meeting of the “Corps”
shall be fined the sum of ten
[page 2]
cents for each offense, the same
to be charged on his account.”
Now as you will notice
these fines count up in a
long run, and my “suggestion”
would be for you to write
Jim asking him to write out
and forward an application for
a furlough for the time he
will necessarily be away,
which if granted, will exclude
him from all fines and
assessments levied in the
mean time, or during his
furlough, and thereby making
his account amount to only
the regular dues.
Hoping I have not taken too
much liberty in doing thus.
I am, yours & etc.
