The Meyer family came from Germany to Rochester in 1836, traveling through New York State on the Erie Canal. They ran several boatyards in the area and specialized in building lakers, steamboats, and bullheads like the ones seen in this photograph. This type of boat was used for transporting grains and other dry products along the canal.
