Anthony apologizes for not responding to an invitation to attend Juliet’s commencement ceremony. She encourages Juliet to enroll at the University of Rochester when it opens its doors to female students, which Anthony anticipates happening later that year.

My dear young friend
Juliet L. Crossett
Here I find your lovely
invitation to be present at your commence-
ment exercises June 22d – not only not accepted,
but not even acknowledged!!
That it should rise to my view this
A.M. after the lovely crowd of girls that
were with us last evening – seems a happy
incident – one that helps me to ask if you
will not be one of the first class of girls
to enter the open doors of our Rochester
University? – Of course we are not positively certain
that they will open this year – but we hope they will,
and that the trustees will be moved to waive their
demand for $100.000 – before admitting the girls!!
I am sure you must have had a
nice time – – If only the laws of matter

would admit a body to be in two places
at the same time – I should be able
to accept a great many invitations
that come to me from all quarters –
Well – to whatever college you go – I
am sure you will do well your part
every time – and thus prove yourself
the worthy daughter of your devoted
mother & father – thus trusting – and
with a great deal of love to your dear
sister – as well as parents – & yourself
ever sincerely & affectionately
