Ruby Partida was born in 1990 in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised in Rochester, New York. Her mother was from Puerto Rico, and her father was born in Mexico. Partida earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Nazareth College in 2014. She was the first person in her family to attend college.

In this interview, Partida discusses her mixed heritage and how her parents met. She explains how her family fell apart, and shares the difficulties of growing up with an absentee father. Partida touches on some of the culinary traditions from both sides of her family. She discusses at length the challenges of navigating “Spanglish” with her mother. Partida examines the Americanization of her family’s traditions, and the few remnants of Puerto Rican culture that remain with them. She also touches on the fading influence of the Catholic Church in Latino communities. Finally, Partida explains what her mixed heritage means to her.
